Tripura Launches Rooftop Solar Panel Scheme for Just ₹1,000

Agartala, May 20: Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Wednesday that the state government, in collaboration with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, will provide rooftop solar panels for just ₹1,000 to consumers using less than 50 units of electricity. So far, 150,000 families have been identified for this initiative.

The announcement was made during the launch of the Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic System Handbook at the Geetanjali Government Guest House. Highlighting the benefits of the Prime Minister’s “PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme,” Nath mentioned that the government is offering subsidies of ₹33,000 for a 1 kW solar system, ₹66,000 for a 2 kW system, and ₹85,800 for a 3 kW system.

Nath stated that the PM Surya Ghar scheme is being implemented rapidly in Tripura. To date, approximately 17,000 individuals have registered for the program, and around 3,500 families have already installed rooftop solar systems.

Currently, the state is producing 11 megawatts of electricity under this scheme. With support from the Asian Development Bank, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, and the state government, a new target has been set to identify 150,000 families consuming less than 50 units of electricity. These families will receive a solar system valued at ₹66,000 for just ₹1,000.

The initiative is expected to generate around 150 megawatts of electricity in the state. Nath expressed optimism that work on this project will commence next month. Beneficiaries are being identified based on official records of electricity consumers. There are approximately 300,000 families in the state, with the initial phase targeting 150,000 families.

Additionally, Nath mentioned that a German organization is collaborating with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited to provide training to officials, engineers, and vendors on the maintenance and repair of rooftop solar systems.

Following the training program, two handbooks in English and Bengali have been published to assist consumers and relevant stakeholders. Nath noted that previously, consumers had to pay electricity bills, but now many are earning money by supplying electricity through rooftop solar systems. The handbook launched today will help vendors, engineers, bank officials, and consumers understand the system and its maintenance. Those who could not attend the training will also benefit from these booklets.
