
Agartala, March 16: Tripura’s Finance Minister Pranjit Singha Roy unveiled a tax-free budget of ₹34,212.31 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27 in the assembly on Monday. This budget anticipates a fiscal deficit of ₹240.72 crore. The focus is on infrastructure development, boosting investments, creating jobs, and strengthening the health and tourism sectors.
This budget marks a 5.52% increase compared to the previous year’s estimates.
The Finance Minister announced that in 2026-27, the state government will allocate ₹914.82 crore to the politically significant Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is a 6.34% increase from the last year. Notably, elections for the 30-member TTAADC are scheduled for April.
During his nearly two-hour budget speech, Roy emphasized that the state government is taking proactive steps to enhance overall socio-economic development through infrastructure strengthening, increased investments, and job creation in health and tourism.
He also announced the establishment of Tripura Government Technical University, Tripura Government Women’s University, and Tripura University of Health Sciences.
A new initiative named “Navchetana” was introduced in the budget. This program aims to promote technology-based education by setting up innovation and technology labs in educational institutions. Focus areas include Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), coding, and automation.
Additionally, the “Chief Minister Inter-Caste Employment Project” will be launched to provide job opportunities abroad for nursing, ITI, diploma, and graduate students. A drone school will also be established to provide professional training for drone pilots, accredited by the DGCA.
A foreign language school will be opened in collaboration with the Ramakrishna Mission in Agartala.
To protect farmers from natural disasters, the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme has insured the crops of 96,000 farmers. Moreover, 11 targeted intervention programs for HIV/AIDS prevention have been initiated, involving link workers and NGOs. Six mobile vans are operational for testing in remote areas.
Under the Mission Shakti initiative, medical and legal assistance, temporary shelter, food, and psychological counseling are being provided to women affected by violence. One-Stop Centers (OSCs) are operational in all eight districts, with the central government approving two additional OSCs.
The Finance Minister noted that during the ‘Destination Tripura-Business Conclave’ held in Agartala and the ‘Rising North East Investment Summit’ in New Delhi in 2025-26, the state received investment proposals worth ₹15,800 crore. Out of these, 91 projects worth ₹5,022 crore have already commenced in the past year.
To further accelerate investments, the ‘Destination Tripura-Business Meet 2026’ will be held in May 2026.
Additionally, several projects are being implemented with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to strengthen tourism infrastructure. As a result of government efforts, the number of tourists in the state surged to 650,772 in 2025-26 (as of February), compared to 529,815 in 2018-19.
