Guwahati, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, commemorated the anniversary of the historic Karbi Peace Accord on September 4, calling it a pivotal milestone that transformed the state’s social and political landscape. He noted that the agreement has ushered in a new era of peace, stability, and development in Karbi Anglong, addressing long-standing issues of unrest and insurgency in the region.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma emphasized that the accord symbolizes a decisive shift towards lasting harmony, fulfilling the aspirations of the Karbi people without compromising Assam’s territorial integrity.
“We are celebrating the historic signing of the Karbi Peace Accord today,” Sarma stated. “This crucial juncture has forever altered Assam’s socio-political landscape, opening a new chapter towards enduring peace.”
The agreement has paved the way for new opportunities, including infrastructure development and targeted welfare programs for tribal communities, as well as pathways for youth engagement, arts, and local entrepreneurship.
As Karbi Anglong progresses towards prosperity, Sarma praised the spirit of peace and unity that made the accord possible. He highlighted it as a prime example of how dialogue can forge a stronger future. The Assam government remains committed to rapid development and the welfare of its people while safeguarding their unique identities.
The Karbi Peace Accord was signed on September 4, 2021, in New Delhi by representatives from the central government, Assam government, and Karbi groups. This agreement followed years of rebellion and violence linked to Karbi insurgent organizations.
Provisions of the accord include the rehabilitation and resettlement of armed cadres, enhanced administrative and political powers for the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and a special development package for the region. The objective is to reintegrate former militants into society and create conditions for lasting peace and development in the hilly districts.
Since the signing, hundreds of cadres from various Karbi armed groups have surrendered and joined the peace process. The agreement is viewed as a significant step towards addressing the long-standing demands of the Karbi community through dialogue and constitutional means.
