Kolkata, June 24: Police reported on Wednesday that Tina Bhattacharya Saha, a member of the Nadia District Council and a leader of the Trinamool Congress, along with her husband, has gone missing. This incident occurred just a day after authorities seized over three kilograms of gold jewelry valued at ₹4.39 crore from their home.
Authorities are actively searching for Tina Bhattacharya Saha, who is known to be a close associate of the arrested former mayor of Bidhannagar, Sabyasachi Dutta.
The police stated that the couple was not present at their residence in Tehatta, Nadia district, during a search operation that began on Monday night and continued until Wednesday evening.
Searches were also conducted at the homes of their parents and in-laws. According to their elderly mother-in-law, the couple left for work together on Monday and has not been in contact with their son and daughter-in-law since then.
Neighbors reported seeing them leaving in their car. There are concerns that they may have learned about the search at their home and decided not to return. It is suspected that the couple may be hiding following the discovery of the substantial amount of gold.
Meanwhile, officials from the Bidhannagar South Police Station have summoned them for questioning.
Notably, the police conducted the search at Tina Bhattacharya Saha’s home based on information obtained from the arrested former mayor Sabyasachi Dutta, leading to the recovery of gold jewelry worth over ₹4.39 crore.
The police announced on Tuesday that the gold was found after an overnight search at the council member’s residence in Tehatta. The Bidhannagar police have seized all items and initiated an investigation.
Earlier this month, Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested on multiple charges, including extortion and illegal property possession. He was a candidate in the recent assembly elections from Barasat but did not win. Shortly after the elections, he was arrested and placed in judicial custody.
Investigations into the sources of Dutta’s illegal assets revealed that he primarily purchased gold using extorted money and black money. Investigators discovered receipts for gold purchases from his flat in Rajarhat and a bank locker, along with a significant amount of gold jewelry.
Subsequently, it was revealed that Dutta used his influence not only for his own benefit but also to assist his close friends in acquiring gold.
Taking into account various pieces of information gathered during the inquiry, the Bidhannagar police launched a search operation late Monday night in Tehatta.
Investigating officers visited Tina Bhattacharya Saha’s home alongside Sabyasachi Dutta and recovered gold jewelry valued at ₹4.39 crore.
