Kolkata, May 23: Trinamool Congress councillor Sanjay Das was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his residence in the Nagar Bazaar area of Kolkata’s North suburbs early Saturday. The incident occurred in Ward No. 18 of the South Dumdum municipality in North 24 Parganas district.
Upon receiving the report, local police arrived at the scene and took the body into custody for a post-mortem examination. Initial investigations suggest the possibility of suicide.
However, authorities stated that the true cause of death will only be determined after the detailed post-mortem report is available. No suicide note was found in Das’s bedroom, where his body was discovered hanging.
Local residents revealed that Das was close to Aditi Munshi, a former Trinamool Congress MLA from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency and a well-known devotional singer, as well as her husband, Debaraj Chakraborty, who is also a Trinamool Congress councillor in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Munshi had recently lost the election in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency.
Neighbors noted that Das had been quite depressed since the results of the West Bengal Assembly elections were announced on May 4. A recent incident involving the police detaining Debaraj Chakraborty for questioning related to alleged involvement in post-election violence in 2021 further troubled the late councillor. Local residents believe that Das may have taken this extreme step due to overwhelming mental stress.
Earlier on Friday, a single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta of the Calcutta High Court granted interim relief to Munshi and Chakraborty against any coercive action by the police until June 19 in a case related to disproportionate assets. Justice Sengupta also directed the state government to present all evidence related to the allegations against Munshi and her husband in court by the next hearing date. Additionally, the state police were instructed to submit a progress report on the investigation by the same date.
