Tribute to Asha Bhosle: A 14-Foot Jhumka Erected in Bareilly

Mumbai, May 1: The upcoming episode of the singing reality show ‘Indian Idol’ will pay tribute to the legendary singer Asha Bhosle.

Lyricist and poet Manoj Muntashir shared the story behind the timeless classic “Jhumka Gira Re,” sung by the late Asha Bhosle, during a recent set visit.

Manoj recounted how the great music director Madan Mohan once called Asha and said, “Asha, I have a song for you. The lyrics are ‘Jhumka Gira Re in Bareilly’s market.'” He added that Asha’s rendition made the song so popular that the government erected a 14-foot tall jhumka in the outskirts of Bareilly, naming the intersection ‘Jhumka Chowk.’

The song “Jhumka Gira Re” is from the classic film ‘Mera Saaya,’ directed by Raj Khosla. It became a hit in the 1960s and holds a special place in Hindi cinema. The song features a playful and mischievous Sadhana Shivdasani. The film also starred Sunil Dutt, Sadhana Shivdasani, Prem Chopra, K.N. Singh, and others.

Asha Bhosle, the iconic singer, passed away on April 12 at the age of 92. She was hospitalized on April 11 due to extreme fatigue and a chest infection.

Her granddaughter Janai recently shared a video, expressing that her grandmother was not just a family member but her entire world.

Janai wrote in her post, “If anyone remembers her, do so with the same joy and vivacity she was known for. She filled everyone’s life with laughter and happiness.”
