Ranchi, August 30: In Ranchi, Congress leaders and tribal organizations held a rally named ‘Tribal Unity Rally’ under the leadership of former Congress MLA Bandhu Tirkey. The event aimed to strongly oppose the proposed redistricting based on population and the Mines and Minerals Amendment Bill. Leaders warned that these measures threaten the rights of tribal communities over their numbers, participation, and land resources.
There is significant discontent among tribal organizations regarding the redistricting. Leaders argue that if redistricting occurs based on population, it will reduce the number of seats in tribal-majority areas, thereby weakening their political participation and voice.
Bandhu Tirkey stated, “If our seats are reduced based on population, we will retaliate fiercely. The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 must be withdrawn. The opposition speaks similarly. What is the situation of tribals in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand?”
Sukhdev Bhagat emphasized, “The Tribal Unity Rally is certainly against redistricting. Through this, the government aims to diminish the tribal population and suppress their voices. Today, tribal organizations have organized this event against such actions. Our people are on the streets, and in the assembly, we will fight under Rahul Gandhi‘s leadership.”
Subodh Kant Sahay remarked that the situation today is worse than it was in 2011, which led to the suspension of the redistricting process in states like Assam and Jharkhand. He stressed the importance of transforming the current environment into a more empowered system.
Another leader noted that this rally demonstrates the strength of tribal unity. The BJP’s introduction of new rules attempts to divide the tribal community, and this rally sends a powerful message that will resonate beyond Jharkhand, impacting the entire country.
