Train Derails in Pakistans Punjab Province, 26 Injured

Islamabad, March 25: A serious train derailment occurred in Pakistan’s Punjab province, where seven carriages of the Tezgam train, traveling from Lahore to Karachi, went off the tracks near the Adam Wahan railway station on the Bahawalpur-Lodhran section. Local media reports indicate that 26 passengers sustained injuries in the incident.

The train derailed late Tuesday night, with five of its carriages overturning. According to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, local officials, including Lodhran’s Deputy Commissioner Abdul Hafeez, Additional Deputy Commissioner Liaqat Gilani, and the District Police Officer, arrived at the scene to oversee rescue operations.

Rescue teams are currently working to free some passengers trapped in the overturned carriages. Pakistan Railways’ Public Relations Officer Kaleem Ahmed confirmed that there have been no fatalities reported, while the injured are receiving medical assistance from rescue teams. Muhammad Safdar, the media coordinator for Lodhran Rescue 1122, stated that 26 passengers were injured in total.

He added, “Seventeen of them received first aid at the scene, while the remaining nine, including one woman, were transported to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in Lodhran, where one person’s condition is serious.”

Liaqat Gilani, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Lodhran, mentioned that nine passengers were taken to the DHQ Hospital for treatment, while others received first aid on-site. He noted that the 35-bed ward at DHQ Hospital has been reserved for the victims of the train accident.

The spokesperson for Pakistan Railways has not yet disclosed the cause of the derailment. He stated that the reason would be determined following an investigation ordered by railway officials.

Eyewitnesses reported that the couplers between the carriages broke, causing the train to split into two sections. After the split, five of the seven carriages connected to the engine derailed. Authorities have halted railway traffic on the affected track, and a relief train has been dispatched from the Samasatta railway junction.
