Ahmedabad, June 19: In a tragic incident in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district, heavy rainfall led to a rockfall at the Pavagadh pilgrimage site on Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least two pilgrims and injuring several others.
The incident occurred between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM near the Patia Bridge on Pavagadh Hill, where devotees were making their way to the temple located at the summit. Continuous rainfall in the area caused rocks to suddenly break loose and fall onto the path of the pilgrims, creating chaos.
Initial reports indicated that multiple individuals were trapped under the debris after the rocks tumbled down the slope. Rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene to assist those affected. Local police also reached the site shortly after the incident.
Unfortunately, by that time, two individuals had already lost their lives. The injured were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
During the rescue operation, heavy rain continued to pose challenges for emergency personnel. Fortunately, no one else was trapped, and the teams later concluded their relief and rescue efforts.
Sources confirmed that a total of ten people were affected by the incident. Two fatalities were reported, while eight others sustained injuries and were taken to Halol Referral Hospital. The deceased were identified as residents of Kheda district, though their official identities have not yet been released.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the causes of the rockfall. Officials are urging tourists and pilgrims to exercise caution when traveling in hilly areas during the monsoon season.
