Patna, February 16: Five individuals lost their lives in three separate road accidents in Khagaria district, Bihar, on Monday. Among the deceased was a teenager.
All victims were either motorcyclists or passengers, struck by speeding vehicles. This series of incidents sparked public outrage, leading to a temporary blockade of National Highway 31.
The first accident occurred in the Kumhar Chakki area of the Muffassil police station jurisdiction, where a magic van collided with a speeding truck, resulting in the immediate deaths of two young men. The victims were identified as 30-year-old Dheeraj Kumar and 28-year-old Sanjeev Kumar. According to family members, they were en route to the Katyayani temple in Khagaria for prayers when the tragedy struck.
Following the incident, locals blocked NH-31 near Kumhar Chakki and Chaudha, causing traffic disruptions for nearly an hour and creating long queues of vehicles. The blockade was lifted after police intervention and assurances, allowing traffic to resume normally.
The second incident took place near the Chaudha Durga temple in the Maheshkhunta police station area. A speeding Scorpio SUV collided with a motorcycle, killing both riders instantly. The deceased were identified as 16-year-old Shivam Kumar and 18-year-old Golu Kumar, who were returning home from Maheshkhunta market at the time.
The third fatal accident occurred near Sapaha, also within the Maheshkhunta police jurisdiction, where a speeding truck ran over a motorcyclist, resulting in the death of 30-year-old Amrish Singh at the scene.
These consecutive accidents have devastated families and sparked significant public anger in the district. Police have initiated investigations into all three cases, working to identify and apprehend the reckless drivers involved.
Separate FIRs have been filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for negligence and speeding at the Muffassil and Maheshkhunta police stations. These incidents have reignited serious concerns regarding speeding and road safety in the district.
