Canberra, June 15: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the peace agreement between the United States and Iran on Monday, urging both parties to exercise continued restraint.
In a joint statement with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, PM Albanese expressed satisfaction that the agreement includes steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore freedom of navigation.
He stated, “Australia has long called for de-escalation and an end to fighting in various regions, including Lebanon. As we have noted, the longer the conflict lasts, the greater its impact will be. It is essential to maintain restraint and work diligently to prevent further escalation and secure a solid agreement.”
Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and security in the Middle East, emphasizing that the government will do everything possible to protect Australians from the worst effects of conflict.
US President Donald Trump announced that a deal has been finalized between the US and Iran, allowing the Strait of Hormuz to reopen and ending the US Navy’s blockade. He described it as a significant achievement following months of conflict that had shaken global energy markets and raised fears of widespread fighting in the region.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also welcomed the agreement, congratulating President Trump and the Iranian side for this diplomatic success. He noted that it could pave the way for economic recovery and stability in the region, stressing the importance of implementing the agreed terms with determination and focus.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated, “The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!”
This announcement comes at a time when the world’s attention is focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for a significant portion of global maritime oil trade. The Strait has been a focal point of tension between Washington and Tehran for months, causing fluctuations in energy prices worldwide due to shipping disruptions.
The US President confirmed that he is approving the reopening of international maritime routes and the removal of the US blockade.
He wrote, “I fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the US will be lifting the naval blockade immediately. Ships around the world, start your engines. Let the flow of oil begin.”
