Kabul, May 4: A tragic collision between a passenger vehicle and a truck in the Faryab province of northern Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of three passengers. The provincial police office released a statement on Monday detailing the incident.
According to the police, the accident occurred on Sunday evening in the outskirts of the Ankhoy district. Reports from Xinhua News Agency indicate that the deceased were traveling in a high-speed vehicle.
Authorities have not provided further details but confirmed that an investigation is underway. This incident adds to the alarming trend of fatal accidents on Afghanistan’s perilous highways.
In April 2026 alone, approximately 12 individuals lost their lives in various accidents, with over 80 others injured. Officials often cite poor road conditions, driver negligence, excessive speed, and lack of safety measures as contributing factors to these recurring tragedies.
Just last Thursday, two separate road accidents in the northeastern Badakhshan province resulted in six fatalities and 25 injuries. On April 26, local media outlet Tolo News reported another accident in the southern Helmand province, where two people died and five were injured.
In that incident, which occurred in the outskirts of the Khanashin district, two passengers died on the spot, and five others sustained injuries. Earlier, on April 10, a vehicle collided with a residential house in the eastern Logar province, leading to one death and 15 injuries.
Provincial police spokesperson Mawlavi Ahmadullah Anas stated that this accident occurred in the outskirts of the provincial capital, Pul-e-Alam, attributing it to driver negligence. Similarly, on April 8, a road accident in neighboring Nangarhar province resulted in one fatality and 35 injuries.
According to provincial police spokesperson Khalid Sarhadi, on April 3, a passenger bus in eastern Ghazni province veered off the road due to overspeeding, resulting in two deaths and 13 injuries. This deadly incident took place on the main road in the Qarabagh district.
Afghan police statistics reveal that last year, road accidents in northeastern Badakhshan province alone claimed 136 lives, highlighting the severe challenges facing road safety in the country.
