
Rajkot, May 3: A tragic incident occurred at Aji Dam in Rajkot, where four members of a family drowned while attempting to rescue one another. The police reported that the family had visited a temple near the riverbank on Saturday when the unfortunate event unfolded.
The deceased have been identified as Bharat Jadhav (42), a rickshaw driver, along with his sons Dhaval (18) and Rohit (26), and his wife’s nephew Dhruv Makwana (15).
Three bodies were recovered by late evening, while one person remains missing. According to police, the incident took place between 4 PM and 5 PM when Bharat Jadhav took his family to the Aji Dam area near Mughal Mata Temple. The group had gone there to wash their vehicle and offer prayers at the temple.
Officials reported that, according to a survivor, Rohit was the first to enter the water. He lost his balance and began to struggle in the deep water. Dhaval and Dhruv jumped in to save him but also began to drown. Bharat Jadhav then entered the water to rescue them, and all four were swept away by the current.
Emergency services were alerted, and police and firefighters arrived at the scene. Fire officer D.V. Jadeja stated that they received a call around 4 to 4:30 PM about 3-4 people drowning at Aji Dam. The rescue team arrived and recovered three bodies, which were handed over to emergency services.
Rajkot’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Hetal Patel confirmed that the family was at the temple when the incident occurred. She explained that one person had gone to bathe or wash his hands and slipped into the deep water. In the attempt to rescue him, the others followed and drowned. She confirmed that three bodies had been recovered, and the search for the fourth individual is ongoing.
By late Saturday evening, the Rajkot Fire and Emergency Services had recovered three bodies from the dam, while the search for Rohit Jadhav continues. The police stated that an accidental death report will be filed at Aji Dam police station once the necessary formalities are completed.
