New Delhi, June 12: A devastating fire broke out in a multi-story building in Tughlakabad Extension early this morning, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals, with two others in critical condition. The fire has since been brought under control.
Reports indicate that the blaze originated in the parking area on the ground floor, where 7-8 motorcycles and scooters were engulfed in flames before the fire spread throughout the building. The fire department received an alert at 2:27 AM and promptly began firefighting efforts.
Delhi police officials reported that a call was made to the Govindpuri police station at 2:24 AM, informing them of the fire in a five-story residential building in Tughlakabad Extension. Local police arrived swiftly, followed by additional officers. The police team commenced rescue operations for those trapped inside the building. Soon after, four fire engines and ambulances arrived at the scene.
During the operation, a total of eight individuals were rescued and transported to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre. Unfortunately, three fatalities were confirmed, including a 22-year-old man and two women, while two others remain in serious condition.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit on the ground floor, which quickly ignited seven parked two-wheelers, including an electric scooter that was on charge.
An eyewitness reported to a news agency that the fire started around 2:10 AM. They stated, “We learned about it around 2:20 AM, by which time the fire had spread significantly. My house is directly opposite, and my daughter was outside. I called the fire brigade using my daughter’s phone. When I came down, I saw the flames intensifying. The fire brigade arrived and managed to control the situation.”
The eyewitness added, “My daughter threw a saree towards another building, allowing people trapped inside to escape.” They noted that while the exact cause of the fire is still unclear, it is suspected that the vehicles may have ignited the blaze.
It is worth mentioning that on June 3, a fire in a restaurant in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 21 people, including foreign nationals.
