Tragic Bus Fires Claim Lives in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Amaravati, March 26: A devastating bus accident in Markapuram district of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals, with 22 others injured. This incident marks the latest in a series of fatal bus accidents in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the past six months.

In the last six months, there have been at least four major bus accidents in these states. On October 24, 2025, a private bus caught fire near Kurnool, leading to the tragic deaths of 19 passengers. The bus was traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru when it ran over a motorcycle that had fallen onto the road after a collision with a divider.

The bus, carrying 46 people, dragged the motorcycle for nearly 200 meters, causing friction and fuel leakage that ignited a fire, engulfing the entire vehicle. Despite the chaos, 27 passengers, including both drivers, managed to escape by breaking the windows.

On November 3, 2025, a collision between a bus and a truck in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana resulted in 19 fatalities and 24 injuries. The bus, which was transporting 72 passengers from Tandur to Hyderabad, was struck head-on by a tipper truck loaded with gravel. Among the deceased were 10 women and a 10-month-old baby. The impact crushed passengers seated in the front rows, as the truck penetrated the bus.

On the same day, a private bus overturned in Eluru district, killing one person and injuring 10 others. This accident occurred when a Bharati Travels bus flipped while making a turn near Jubilee Nagar.

Another accident on November 4, 2025, in Sri Sathya Sai district involved a private bus colliding with a truck, resulting in one death and eight injuries. This incident took place near Dhamajipalli in the Chennakothapalle mandal.

On January 22, 2026, a collision between a private bus and a container truck in Nandyal district led to a fire that claimed three lives. The bus lost control after a tire burst and crossed the divider, colliding with an oncoming truck. Fortunately, all passengers survived, although four suffered minor fractures and were hospitalized.

In light of the rising number of road accidents, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials last November to conduct a third-party audit to identify the causes of these incidents. This audit aims to determine whether accidents are due to vehicle malfunctions, driver errors, or flaws in road construction. The Chief Minister expressed concern over the 15,462 road accidents in 2025, which resulted in 6,433 fatalities.

Andhra Pradesh ranks eighth in the country for road accidents. Officials noted that one-third of these incidents involve two-wheelers, while 53% are self-accidents involving cars and two-wheelers. The Chief Minister has instructed investigations into the high fatality rates in Nellore, Tirupati, Palnadu, Annamayya, and Kakinada districts.

Authorities reported that 79% of accidents are caused by speeding, 3% by driving in the wrong direction, and 1% due to alcohol and mobile phone use. Additionally, 42% of accidents occur on national highways, while 21% happen on state highways.
