New Delhi, September 2: In a significant political shift ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Asim Waqaar, a leader from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), joined the Congress party on Wednesday. This move is seen as a major setback for AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. After joining Congress, Waqaar advised Owaisi to focus on defeating the BJP rather than targeting those who are successfully opposing the party.
In an interview, Waqaar stated that a majority of the country’s population stands with Rahul Gandhi. When asked about the alleged injustice faced by Azam Khan from the Samajwadi Party, he urged for thorough research on the matter, emphasizing that the discussion cannot be limited to a single line.
Regarding the reservation issue, Waqaar asserted that every caste and religion deserving of reservation should receive it. He highlighted the plight of those struggling to survive without it, stating, “If I am unable to feed my family or provide them with basic necessities, I expect to receive reservation.”
Waqaar expressed that Muslims trust those who can challenge the BJP effectively. “I believe that if anyone in India wants to defeat the BJP the most, it is Muslims. I am a Muslim too, and I share this sentiment,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to supporting strong leadership against the BJP.
He identified Rahul Gandhi as the future Prime Minister, stating, “I have known this for a long time. For the past five years, I have maintained that Rahul Gandhi is the future Prime Minister of the country.” He reiterated his belief in Gandhi’s leadership potential, even during his time in the previous party.
On the other hand, Ajay Rai, President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, commented on the defamation lawsuit against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He claimed that false accusations were made against him and challenged anyone with evidence to present it. Rai criticized Adityanath for allegedly lying while wearing saffron attire, stating he has challenged him in court to provide proof and apologize to the citizens.
Rai also raised concerns about the appointment process of the CEO of the Ram Temple Trust, alleging that it was done to legitimize the alleged misappropriation of donations. He argued that religious leaders, rather than a CEO, should be appointed to ensure proper tradition and transparency in religious affairs.
Welcoming Asim Waqaar to Congress, Rai described him as a strong ally who has placed his trust in Rahul Gandhi and the party.
Senior Congress leader Rajendra Pal Gautam mentioned that discussions regarding seat-sharing with the Samajwadi Party for the upcoming assembly elections would begin soon, once the party’s organizational work is completed.
Gautam noted Waqaar’s previous role as the main spokesperson for AIMIM and his responsibilities across various states. He highlighted Waqaar’s consistent focus on issues related to the nation, education, and health, stating that his decision to join Congress was influenced by Rahul Gandhi’s dedication to strengthening democracy. Waqaar’s inclusion is expected to bolster the party and its efforts to enhance democratic values.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi questioned the BJP’s rationale behind the removal of the previous CEO of the Ram Temple Trust, urging them to clarify the reasons behind this decision. “You cannot mislead millions of devotees under the guise of an SIT,” he stated.
