Prayagraj, May 16: Traders in Prayagraj’s jewelry market have shown a mixed but largely positive response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to refrain from purchasing gold for one year. Many see this as a visionary step taken in the interest of the nation, although they hope the government will provide alternative arrangements for traders.
Jewelry merchants in the renowned Prayagraj market expressed their support for the Prime Minister’s appeal. One trader stated, “He is our Prime Minister. Whatever he has suggested for the long term must be in the nation’s interest. We should support him.”
Another trader added, “The Prime Minister made this appeal considering the national interest. With conflicts occurring globally and pressure on foreign exchange reserves, reducing gold purchases will benefit the country. This reflects his foresight. We should also back this appeal to prevent any negative impact on the nation.”
Members of the Prayagraj Jewelers Association collectively welcomed the Prime Minister’s appeal. One trader remarked, “We fully support the Prime Minister’s statement. He hasn’t just called for a halt; he must have considered better options for both traders and the public. If the public refrains from buying gold for a year, he must have found a way for us as well.”
Traders believe that a temporary halt on gold purchases may impact business in the short term, but considering the country’s economic situation and energy crisis, it is a necessary step. They expressed hope that the government would introduce solid policies to reduce dependence on gold imports and assist local traders with alternative investment options.
Recently, Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary gold purchases for at least a year. He emphasized that the foreign exchange reserves spent on gold could be allocated to other critical sectors, especially during the current global crisis.
