TMC Rebels Consider Defamation Suit Against Mahua Moitra Over Social Media Post

Kolkata, June 21: A group of rebel Lok Sabha MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is contemplating filing a defamation lawsuit against fellow party member Mahua Moitra. The group is led by seasoned MPs Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Shatabdi Roy.

These MPs have recently joined the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) based in Tripura. The potential lawsuit stems from a controversial social media post made by Moitra.

In her post, Moitra accused two rebel TMC MPs of abandoning the party for financial gain, claiming they received at least ₹40 crore each to join the NCPI.

The controversy surrounding Moitra’s post has gained traction, especially following recent reports of rebellion among several MPs from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. Rumors suggest they may switch allegiance to the Eknath Shinde faction. Sanjay Raut from the Thackeray camp recently accused them of accepting ₹15 crore in exchange for their loyalty.

Sharing Raut’s post, Moitra made serious allegations against the rebel TMC MPs, questioning, “Only ₹15 crore? Why so cheap? According to our sources, they received ₹4 crore in advance and will get ₹1 crore per month for the next 36 months.”

Sources indicate that the rebel TMC MPs held a virtual meeting on Sunday afternoon to discuss the possibility of filing a defamation suit against Moitra.

Confirming this potential action, Shatabdi Roy stated that they are seriously considering it. Moitra has not only targeted the rebel MPs but has also been vocal against dissenting MLAs from the West Bengal Assembly on social media.

She has accused these MPs and MLAs of betraying the TMC after winning elections on the party’s ticket, insisting they should resign before speaking out against the party leadership.
