Kolkata, June 7: Kailash Mishra, a former candidate from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the Bally assembly seat in West Bengal, has been arrested by police in Madhubani, Bihar. Officials confirmed the arrest on Sunday.

According to authorities, multiple criminal cases have been filed against him at various police stations in West Bengal during the 2021 assembly elections. Police sources indicated that FIRs were registered against him for assault, threats, and extortion under the jurisdictions of Bally, Howrah, and Liluah police stations. Acting on these cases, a team from the West Bengal police apprehended him in Madhubani.

Kailash Mishra hails from the Arar Puwari Tola in the Benipatti block of Madhubani district and is considered a close associate of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. He has previously contested elections from the Bally assembly seat on a TMC ticket.

Following his arrest, the West Bengal police will complete the necessary legal formalities before presenting him in the relevant court.

Earlier on Friday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a TMC district council official in East Midnapore, West Bengal. This district is the home turf of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The arrested individual has been identified as Shamsul Islam, a TMC official (Health Unit) in the East Midnapore district council. He was apprehended for inciting riots during elections for cooperative bank positions.
