Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono Arrives in New Delhi for Joint Commission Meeting

New Delhi, June 7: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono arrived in New Delhi this morning to participate in the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) warmly welcomed him, stating, “Foreign Minister Sugiono and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will co-chair the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting. Both ministers will review the robust strategic partnership between our countries and discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.”

This meeting serves as a crucial platform for both nations to assess the progress of mutual cooperation.

The joint commission mechanism at the level of foreign ministers was established following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2001.

The previous 7th Joint Commission Meeting took place on June 17, 2022, in New Delhi. According to the Indian Consulate in Bali, this meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Indonesia’s then-Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

Earlier, on May 14, Minister Jaishankar met with Foreign Minister Sugiono. The two leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership and cooperation with ASEAN. This meeting occurred during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ gathering, which Minister Jaishankar chaired on Thursday.

On the social media platform X, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in welcoming Foreign Minister Sugiono, stating, “Happy to welcome Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono. We reviewed our comprehensive strategic partnership and the progress of cooperation with ASEAN.”

In January 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited India for a state visit to New Delhi, where he also participated as the chief guest in India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations. This visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Indonesia.

The two nations elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership level during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta in 2018. They also adopted a shared vision for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, significantly strengthening ties, particularly in the defense sector.
