Kolkata, March 15: The Election Commission announced on Sunday the schedule for assembly elections in four states and one union territory. Voting for West Bengal’s 294 assembly seats will occur in two phases. According to the Election Commission, the first phase is set for April 23, followed by the second phase on April 29. The results will be declared on May 4.
In response to the election announcement, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh expressed confidence that the party will return to power in West Bengal. He stated that they expect to win more seats than in the 2021 assembly elections.
Ghosh asserted that TMC will secure over 250 seats in this election, allowing Mamata Banerjee to return as Chief Minister with a majority of more than 250 legislators.
During a media interaction, Ghosh criticized the central government’s alleged vindictive politics, which he claims has marginalized Bengal and disrespected the Bengali language and its people. He emphasized that voters in West Bengal will reject these tactics.
He further claimed that the BJP will face a significant defeat in this election, similar to previous contests, and that TMC will emerge victorious with over 250 seats.
Congress leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir commented on the announcement of election dates, highlighting India’s reputation for democracy and elections worldwide. He noted that elections in India are celebrated like a festival, with five states set to hold elections.
Elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry will occur in a single phase. In West Bengal, the demand was for a one-phase election. The Election Commission has the responsibility to ensure fair elections, and they have decided on a two-phase election for West Bengal. Mir added that the dates could have been pushed further, emphasizing that no legitimate voter in West Bengal should be deprived of their right to vote.
