TMC Accuses Election Commission of Disrespect During Brief Meeting

New Delhi, April 8: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien held a press conference following a meeting with the Election Commission (EC). He claimed that the Chief Election Commissioner treated their delegation with extreme disrespect, dismissing them just seven minutes into the meeting.

O’Brien stated that they arrived well-prepared with representatives from their party. He mentioned that their leader, Mamata Banerjee, had sent nine letters to the Election Commission, none of which received a response or acknowledgment. He emphasized that it is serious for a constitutional body to ignore such correspondence.

According to O’Brien, the meeting commenced at around 10:02 AM and concluded in just 7-8 minutes. During this brief time, he raised several critical issues related to the electoral process. He alleged that certain officials involved in the election process have ties to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He presented six examples to the Election Commission, questioning the fairness of the elections.

He also expressed concerns regarding the transfers and appointments of these officials. O’Brien argued that if such individuals are given responsibilities, free and fair elections would be impossible. However, as he began to address these issues, the Chief Election Commissioner reportedly interrupted him, saying, “Get out of here.”

O’Brien described the entire incident as shameful. He noted that in his 22-year political career and 16 years of parliamentary experience, he had never encountered such a situation with a constitutional body. He openly challenged the Election Commission to release any video or audio recordings of the meeting to reveal the truth.

He added that as their delegation was leaving, one of his colleagues congratulated the Chief Election Commissioner for being the first in Indian history to face removal notices in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

O’Brien further mentioned that all opposition parties are uniting on this issue. He announced that a joint press conference of all anti-BJP parties would take place at Constitution Club around 4:30 PM, where they would elaborate on this matter.

He pointed out that when they arrived at the meeting, they were initially told that their delegation was not authorized, despite being fully authorized. When they attempted to raise their issues, they were not given the opportunity to speak.

O’Brien stressed that the impartiality of institutions like the Election Commission is crucial in a democracy, and if doubts arise, it poses a significant concern for the entire system.
