Kolkata, August 28: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will participate in a Raksha Bandhan event at Jadavpur University (JU) in South Kolkata on Friday. In anticipation of his visit, Kolkata police have issued a high alert and tightened security measures. This decision follows recent clashes between student groups affiliated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The security arrangements have been intensified due to the two recent altercations between these student factions on campus. The police and administration are exercising special vigilance to ensure safety during the event.
Additionally, an inquiry committee formed by the university has commenced an investigation into these incidents. The Chief Minister has previously stated his commitment to eradicating alleged anti-national activities on the Jadavpur University campus and fostering a spirit of nationalism. Concerns have been raised that leftist student organizations may stage protests during the Raksha Bandhan event.
On Friday, the Chief Minister’s schedule includes three events related to Raksha Bandhan: the first at Nazrul Mancha in South Kolkata, the second in his assembly constituency of Bhawanipur, and the third at Jadavpur University.
A Kolkata police officer confirmed that security for the Chief Minister at Jadavpur University will be exceptionally stringent, although he declined to provide further details for security reasons.
Following the recent clashes, the Chief Minister addressed a public gathering, reiterating his resolve to eliminate anti-national activities and promote nationalism within the university. He emphasized the need to put an end to slogans like “Kashmir Maange Azadi,” asserting that it is the government’s responsibility to take action against those who promote such sentiments.
In the meantime, on Friday morning, the Chief Minister extended his greetings to the citizens of the state via social media for Raksha Bandhan. He highlighted the bond of love, trust, and unwavering affection between siblings, wishing everyone a heartfelt Raksha Bandhan.
