The King of Citrus: Pomelos Unique Flavor and Nutritional Benefits

New Delhi, July 2: Pomelo, scientifically known as Citrus Maxima, is regarded as the largest and most distinctive fruit among citrus varieties. Commonly referred to as ‘chakotra’ in Hindi, this fruit is not only impressive in size but also offers numerous health benefits. Due to its unique texture, juicy pulp, and rich nutrient profile, it is often called the “King of Citrus Fruits.”

Pomelo is an evergreen tree that typically grows between 5 to 15 meters tall. Its leaves are green and glossy, and it produces fragrant flowers that are used in perfumery. The fruit itself is quite large, sometimes weighing up to 2 kilograms. It can be round or pear-shaped, and when ripe, it may turn yellow, orange, or light red.

The thick, spongy rind of the pomelo can make peeling it a bit labor-intensive, but the interior is incredibly juicy and flavorful. The pulp is found in large segments, offering a taste that is mildly sweet with a hint of tartness. Some varieties may also have a slight bitterness.

Nutritionally, pomelo is nothing short of a blessing. It is rich in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and enhances the body’s ability to fight diseases. Additionally, it contains a good amount of fiber, aiding in digestive health. The antioxidants present in pomelo help cleanse the body and protect cells from damage.

Pomelo has also been used in traditional medicine. It is believed to be beneficial for treating coughs, fevers, and digestive issues. People enjoy eating it fresh, and its juice is also quite popular.
