Assam Aims for Dairy Production Boost with 1 Million Liters Daily Target

Guwahati, July 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the dairy sector in the state. The ambitious target is to achieve daily milk production of 1 million liters. This initiative also focuses on increasing the income of thousands of rural families.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the vital role of the dairy sector in enhancing rural income and improving family nutrition levels. He stated, “Every glass of milk nourishes a family and strengthens the rural economy.”

The Chief Minister revealed that the state government is providing subsidies to over 25,000 dairy farmers to boost milk production, improve farmers’ incomes, and empower Assam’s dairy ecosystem. He added, “Our mission is to produce 1 million liters of milk daily.”

To increase milk production, the state government is implementing various schemes, including financial assistance, improved livestock management, the use of scientific breeding techniques, and better veterinary services. Officials believe that increased milk production will reduce dependence on imports from other states and create new income opportunities for rural families.

According to the government, the dairy sector has emerged as a significant source of income for small and marginal farmers in Assam. The additional income from livestock farming is strengthening the rural economy alongside agriculture.

The government is also working on enhancing fodder availability, strengthening milk collection infrastructure, and promoting organized dairy farming. A senior government official noted that increased milk production will not only bolster nutritional security but also create new job opportunities in processing, transportation, and marketing within the dairy value chain.

Under the government’s subsidy scheme, farmers are being assisted in adopting modern dairy technologies, purchasing better-breed animals, and modernizing dairy operations. Officials are confident that with continued policy support from the government and active participation from farmers, Assam will swiftly move towards achieving its goal of producing 1 million liters of milk daily. The state government considers agriculture and related sectors as the cornerstone of Assam’s overall development strategy, viewing dairy, fisheries, and livestock as crucial avenues for rural prosperity and job creation.
