The Importance of Rehabilitation for Astronauts After Space Missions

New Delhi, June 4: Space travel is exhilarating, but returning to Earth poses significant challenges for astronauts. Extended periods in a microgravity environment lead to various physiological changes. This is why rehabilitation is deemed essential for astronauts after space missions.

Astronaut Shubanshu Shukla shared insights about astronaut rehabilitation through an Instagram post. He explained that the biggest challenge for returning astronauts is readjusting their bodies to Earth’s normal environment. After spending weeks or months in microgravity, reintroducing the body to Earth’s gravity is not straightforward. Thus, a rehabilitation program becomes crucial post-space missions.

Shukla noted that when astronauts live in space for extended periods, their bodies adapt to an environment where the distinction between up and down blurs. The lack of gravity weakens muscles, reduces bone density, disrupts balance, and affects circulation. Upon returning to Earth, astronauts suddenly feel the weight, making it difficult to walk, stand, or perform everyday tasks.

Post-flight rehabilitation is a scientifically designed program tailored to each astronaut’s age, mission duration, and physical condition. It begins with light stretching and balancing exercises, gradually incorporating strength training, cardio workouts, and coordination improvement activities. Expert trainers oversee the entire program, progressively increasing the intensity of exercises.

Shukla mentioned his trainer, Emil, humorously noting that it sometimes felt like Emil was inventing new ways to make him fall. However, this approach is essential for learning. Through stumbling and regaining balance, astronauts rebuild their strength. The primary goal of rehabilitation is to reintegrate astronauts into normal life, enabling them to move freely and prepare for future missions.

This process also includes physiotherapy, nutritional guidance, muscle monitoring, and mental health support. Many astronauts experience dizziness, fatigue, and joint pain in the initial weeks after returning, which rehabilitation gradually alleviates.
