
Caracas, June 25: Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, have struck Venezuela, causing widespread devastation. The tremors have resulted in the collapse of numerous buildings and homes, with at least 32 fatalities and over 700 injuries reported so far.
Officials warn that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue in affected areas. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a state of emergency in the country.
In her address to the nation following the disaster, President Rodriguez emphasized that the government’s primary goal is to save lives. She noted that national disaster management and civil protection agencies are actively working to rescue those trapped in the affected regions.
Rodriguez described the situation in La Guaira state as extremely tragic, labeling the devastation there as a “real catastrophe.” She stated, “The most significant damage occurred in La Guaira state, where dozens of buildings have collapsed. This area can be termed a ‘real tragedy’ and a ‘disaster zone.’ Rescue workers are tirelessly working day and night to extract people trapped under the rubble.”
Providing updates on the casualties, she mentioned, “Currently, we have confirmed 32 deaths. However, this number may increase based on reports coming from La Guaira state. Additionally, over 700 injured individuals are receiving emergency treatment in public hospitals and private health centers.”
Rodriguez also reminded citizens to utilize the VENAPP platform to report damage to their homes or to provide information about missing family members or friends.
She expressed gratitude for the support received from the international community, stating, “The United States, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, and Qatar have announced the dispatch of rescue teams.”
Rodriguez specifically thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for maintaining contact and conveying messages of assistance and solidarity.
According to the president, China, Brazil, and several Caribbean nations have also offered humanitarian aid. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has assured all possible support.
The government has temporarily closed schools and non-essential activities. Hotels and temporary shelters have been opened for those whose homes have been destroyed or deemed unsafe.
In closing her address, President Rodriguez urged citizens to maintain peace and unity, stating, “Our central and essential goal is to save lives. With national unity, we will overcome this tragedy.” She also called on all religious communities to pray for the victims.
