
New Delhi, February 8: The kitchen is a treasure trove of medicinal properties, yet many are unaware that every spice used can act like a medicine. One such spice is dried ginger, known as “sonth,” which has been utilized in everything from tea to sweets for centuries. This seemingly simple ingredient is, in fact, a potent remedy. Ayurveda has long recognized the benefits of sonth in alleviating various ailments.
Dried ginger is the dehydrated form of ginger, prepared by drying and grinding it into a fine powder. The ancient text ‘Charaka Samhita’ outlines numerous advantages of sonth. According to Ayurveda, it balances digestive fire, improves digestion, keeps the body warm, alleviates constipation, and helps maintain equilibrium in the body’s doshas, particularly kapha and vata. However, understanding the proper ways to consume sonth is equally important.
Sonth contains powerful compounds like gingerol and shogaol, which are effective not only for digestive issues but also for joint pain, arthritis, and even cancer. During the transition from winter to spring, it is advisable to consume sonth in moderation, as this time of year often sees a surge in infections and ailments related to fever and colds, affecting everyone from children to the elderly. If appetite loss is an issue, sonth can also stimulate hunger. Regular consumption helps alleviate feelings of heaviness in the stomach and aids in detoxifying the body, ensuring timely hunger cues.
Additionally, sonth provides relief from joint pain and arthritis due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce swelling and discomfort. It acts like a natural pain reliever. During the change of seasons, particularly in late winter, coughs, colds, and respiratory issues become more prevalent. In such cases, sonth helps loosen mucus in the lungs, clearing the airways.
However, it is crucial to know who should avoid consuming sonth. Due to its warming properties, it should not be taken during hot weather, as it can cause stomach irritation. Individuals suffering from piles or high blood pressure should also refrain from using sonth. Pregnant women should avoid it as well, as it may lead to premature delivery.
