New Delhi, March 14: Members of the National Conference (NC) from Jammu and Kashmir met with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. They submitted a memorandum addressing various issues related to Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a statement from the National Conference, Rajya Sabha members Chaudhary Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, and Shammi Oberoi raised pressing concerns during their meeting with the President. They reiterated their demand for Jammu and Kashmir to be granted full statehood as soon as possible.
The MPs emphasized the need to protect local residents’ rights to land and employment. They also highlighted the rising unemployment among youth, calling for a comprehensive economic and employment package.
Additionally, the MPs requested that major hydroelectric projects currently operated by NHPC Limited be returned to Jammu and Kashmir. This would allow the region to benefit appropriately from its natural resources.
They also pointed out the environmental challenges posed by climate change and the rapid melting of the Kolahoi glacier, stressing the need for scientific and policy measures to protect the Himalayan ecosystem.
In October of last year, four members were elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir. Three of these members belong to the NC, while the fourth seat was won by BJP’s Sat Sharma.
These four seats had been vacant since February 2021 due to the absence of an assembly in Jammu and Kashmir. The elections held in October 2024 were the first since President’s Rule was imposed in June 2017.
