Jamtara, March 14: Anger has erupted in Jamtara, Jharkhand, following the tragic death of a three-year-old child due to inadequate medical care at the local hospital. The incident has sparked political and social unrest in the district. On Friday, furious residents not only protested but also burned effigies of the state’s Health Minister and local MLA, Dr. Irfan Ansari, to express their strong discontent.
Protesters argued that the minister has no moral right to remain in office given his failure to improve healthcare services in his own constituency.
The child, Ankush Sahu, complained of sudden stomach pain and vomiting, prompting his family to rush him to the Sadar Hospital. Relatives claim that there was no pediatrician available at the hospital on Thursday. Amid chaos, while the child was given oxygen, the lack of a specialist led to a deterioration in his condition. Eventually, the hospital management expressed their inability to assist further and referred him elsewhere. Tragically, the child passed away en route to Asansol in West Bengal.
In response to this incident, a large number of local citizens gathered at the district collectorate on Friday to submit a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Ravi Anand. Leaders of the protest, Jitu Singh and Akash Sahu, stated that the Jamtara Sadar Hospital has merely become a ‘referral center.’ They highlighted the absence of pediatric doctors and basic facilities such as an ICU or ventilators.
The public reacted sharply, noting that while Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari claims to provide high-tech healthcare services, children in his own district are dying due to lack of treatment. The memorandum clearly stated that if specialist doctors and necessary resources are not made available at the Sadar Hospital, the protests will intensify.
