Jammu, August 1: A terrorist attack in Kulgam district of Jammu-Kashmir on Friday evening resulted in the deaths of two migrant workers. Following this incident, security agencies across the region have heightened their vigilance and initiated an investigation. Initial reports indicate that the attackers first inquired about the workers’ names and religion before targeting them. This incident has reignited concerns regarding the safety of migrant workers and the ongoing threat of terrorism in the valley.
Former Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid described the attack as extremely unfortunate, noting that two young men, aged approximately 25 to 26, were brutally murdered while trying to earn a living in Kashmir. Both victims were residents of Chhattisgarh. The method of the attack, where the assailants asked for identification and religious affiliation, mirrors tactics used in a previous terrorist incident in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam last year. Although the scale of this attack may be small, it reflects a persistent pattern of targeting individuals based on their identity.
Vaid pointed out that this attack occurred during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage in Jammu-Kashmir. Senior officials from the police, army, central paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies will jointly review the incident. He emphasized that the terrorists involved will be identified and apprehended, and security measures will be further strengthened to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The former DGP also referenced the situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu-Kashmir, describing it as grave. He claimed that various reports indicate a significant number of killings by the Pakistani army and Rangers.
Retired Brigadier Vijay Sagar Dhiman noted that since 2019, the effectiveness of security operations in Jammu-Kashmir has significantly increased. He stated that the success rate of security forces has reached nearly 90%, which has hindered terrorists from executing large-scale attacks as they once did. Consequently, terrorists are now targeting relatively easier victims, such as unarmed civilians and migrant workers, to instill fear.
Jammu-Kashmir’s Deputy Chief Minister Surendra Kumar Chaudhary expressed his sorrow over the incident. He remarked that the history of the state’s security forces is filled with bravery and sacrifice, yet recent events raise concerns. He reminded that just days before the murder of the two workers in Kulgam, a soldier was also martyred in Anantnag. Such incidents continually prompt questions about what additional measures are necessary to enhance security. Currently, security agencies are actively investigating the case and searching for the perpetrators.
