Tensions Rise in Maharashtra Legislative Council Over Illegal Immigration Debate

Mumbai, March 1: A heated debate erupted in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Saturday regarding the issue of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants in the state. Members from both the ruling party and the opposition engaged in a fierce discussion.

The debate intensified as Anil Parab, an MLC from Shiv Sena (UBT), claimed that they could identify 2,000 infiltrators within two days. In response, Home State Minister Yogesh Kadam delivered a strong rebuttal.

Parab referenced a recent case of fake birth certificates revealed by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, questioning the government’s operational methods. He stated, “This is not a political issue; it is a matter of national security. Illegal immigrants are residing in every slum in Mumbai and even running small businesses. Are the police and the municipal corporation unaware of this?”

Targeting BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, Parab remarked, “Kirit Somaiya currently has no work. Send him with me; I will identify 2,000 infiltrators in two days.” He deemed document verification insufficient and called for the establishment of a special task force to conduct local area inspections.

In response, Minister Kadam urged Parab to share any concrete information he might have with the authorities. He presented statistics indicating that during the MVA government’s tenure in 2021, 109 Bangladeshi nationals were deported, while in 2025, 2,376 infiltrators were expelled.

Kadam mentioned that a special team, consisting of one officer and five personnel, has been created at every police station to take action against illegal immigrants, with search operations being conducted with the assistance of the ATS.

Regarding the demand for a special task force, Kadam stated that the government would consider its formation if necessary.
