Tensions Rise in Kerala Over Chief Minister Selection Amid Protests in Wayanad

Mumbai, May 13: The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) recently achieved a significant victory in Kerala. However, just ten days into their new term, disputes over who will be the Chief Minister continue to create rifts within the party. This internal conflict has sparked public outrage, now visible on the streets of Wayanad.

Amid the ongoing struggle for the Chief Ministerial face, anonymous posters targeting Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have appeared near the Wayanad District Congress Committee office. These posters reflect sentiments that many within the party privately acknowledge. There is growing public opposition against the potential elevation of K.C. Venugopal as the next Chief Minister of Kerala.

The posters, written in English, accuse Rahul and Priyanka of attempting to impose K.C. Venugopal on Kerala despite widespread public dissent. One poster warns, “Kerala will never forgive you,” while another ominously states, “Wayanad will become the second Amethi,” directly recalling Rahul Gandhi’s embarrassing electoral defeat in Uttar Pradesh in 2019.

Wayanad was once a stronghold for Rahul Gandhi, and now it is represented in Parliament by Priyanka Gandhi. The rising anger in this constituency poses a direct challenge to the Gandhi siblings’ authority over Congress affairs in Kerala.

The posters go further, mocking Venugopal and labeling him merely as Rahul Gandhi’s “bag carrier.” They also warn that if the leadership ignores public sentiment, neither Rahul nor Priyanka will be welcome in Wayanad again.

Although no organization has claimed responsibility for these posters, their emergence is seen as clear evidence that factionalism within Congress has escalated from behind-the-scenes lobbying to an open political rebellion.

The posters state that while K.C. may sometimes be your ally, the people of Kerala will not forgive you. This is not a threat; rather, it signals that our patience has run out. Do not come to Wayanad just to win elections. Forget Wayanad; you will never win here again.

Ironically, while a significant segment of Kerala’s population opposes Venugopal’s candidacy, reports suggest he enjoys substantial support from the newly elected Congress legislators.

This contradiction has placed the party’s high command in a challenging position. Despite lengthy discussions in Delhi, no final decision has been announced yet.
