Hyderabad, April 6: Tensions flared in Hyderabad during a demolition drive by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Sunday. The situation escalated as clashes broke out between the police and leaders of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Following the incident, the police registered a case against AIMIM MLC Rahmat Beg, while Sahil Akbar was arrested and sent to judicial custody.
The incident occurred in the Charminar zone, where the GHMC was conducting a campaign to remove illegal encroachments. Reports indicate that the municipal team was clearing unauthorized structures from Lad Bazaar to Purana Pool Road. A total of 52 encroachments were removed, including 17 permanent and 35 temporary structures.
As the demolition progressed, local residents and AIMIM leaders began to protest, creating a tense atmosphere. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated into a heated exchange between the police and demonstrators, which eventually turned into a scuffle. The police claimed that their personnel faced rude behavior and attempts to obstruct their work.
An FIR was filed based on a complaint from Constable Dheeraj Tiwari, who alleged that Rahmat Beg, Sahil Akbar, and others physically assaulted him. Tiwari stated that he was pushed, causing a fracture in his right arm.
In response to the incident, the police swiftly arrested Sahil Akbar, the in-charge of Ghansi Bazaar Division and a former corporator. He was presented in court on April 5, where he was remanded to judicial custody. Investigations are ongoing against Rahmat Beg and other accused individuals.
Meanwhile, AIMIM leaders and local residents argue that the GHMC’s actions were hasty and did not allow them adequate opportunity to voice their concerns. They claim that the administration opted for a heavy-handed approach instead of dialogue, exacerbating the situation.
Currently, police have increased security in the area and are closely monitoring the situation. Officials stated that maintaining law and order is their top priority, and strict action will be taken against those who disrupt government operations.
