Chandigarh, April 10: Sunil Jakhar, the President of the Punjab BJP, has called on the state government to announce the implementation of a crop insurance scheme for farmers during the special assembly session scheduled for April 13.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Jakhar emphasized that the central government has already rolled out a crop insurance scheme, yet the Punjab government has yet to adopt it. He described the delay as an injustice to farmers.
Jakhar accused the Chief Minister of neglecting the interests of farmers, who are currently facing natural calamities. Unseasonal rains and hailstorms have caused significant damage to crops, compounding the losses incurred during floods in 2023 and 2025.
He pointed out that many farmers have not received compensation due to the absence of a crop insurance scheme in the state. Farmers remain anxious about how they will recover from the losses caused by these disasters.
Jakhar reminded the Chief Minister that three years ago, it was announced that the state would launch its own agricultural insurance scheme, replacing the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. However, despite the passage of three years and substantial losses amounting to thousands of crores for farmers, this scheme has yet to be implemented. Farmers are still awaiting its launch.
With the special assembly session approaching, Jakhar urged the Chief Minister to fulfill his promise and announce Punjab’s own crop insurance scheme without further delay. This would ensure timely compensation for farmers affected by natural disasters.
He also suggested that if the state government is facing financial constraints, it should immediately implement the central government’s crop insurance scheme, which has proven beneficial in several other states.
Speaking to the media, Jakhar criticized the government for spending heavily on advertisements instead of allocating funds from the already debt-ridden state treasury to cover farmers’ insurance premiums. He also demanded the immediate release of pending dearness allowances (DA) for employees and pensioners.
