Shimla, February 26: Rajiv Bindal, the president of the Himachal Pradesh BJP, has expressed strong concerns regarding the clash between the Delhi and Himachal Pradesh police over the custody of three Youth Congress workers. He accused the Himachal government of shielding these workers, who are alleged to have tarnished India’s image during the AI Summit.
The Delhi police arrested the three Youth Congress workers from Shimla in connection with a “shirtless protest” at the AI Summit. A confrontation arose as the police team was transporting them to Delhi, leading to a situation with the Shimla police. An FIR has since been filed against Delhi police officials in Shimla.
Bindal stated that the events of the past 24 hours are unprecedented in the state’s history. He criticized the Himachal government for protecting the accused. “Instead of following legal procedures, the government has created a conflict between law enforcement agencies by filing an FIR against the Delhi police team,” he said.
He noted that the Delhi police had come to Himachal Pradesh under legal protocols, including court orders. However, the Himachal police reportedly filed a kidnapping case against the Delhi officers and obstructed their actions. Bindal remarked, “When a state government pits one police force against another for political gain, it poses a threat to constitutional governance.”
He highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation in Himachal Pradesh over the past three years, citing recent incidents such as a suspicious death in Nalagarh, an attack on a forest officer in Chamba, assaults on administrative officials in Mandi, shootings in Bilaspur and Una, and the brutal murder of a Dalit minor.
Speaking to the media in Una, Bindal said, “In all these serious cases, the government has shown indifference. However, when it comes to protecting those accused of defaming the country, the entire machinery becomes hyperactive.”
The BJP leader also accused the government of undermining constitutional institutions. Referring to the Panchayati Raj elections, he claimed that despite the state election commission’s schedule, the government allegedly instructed officials not to proceed. He labeled this a constitutional crisis and criticized the government for spending millions in legal battles against the election commission in higher courts, citing financial constraints.
