Bihar CM Honors Commonwealth Medal-Winning Para Athletes Somn Rana and Jhandu Kumar

Patna, August 30: On the occasion of National Sports Day, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary honored para-athletes Somn Rana and Jhandu Kumar for their remarkable achievements at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The event took place on Saturday, where both athletes were presented with a cash award, a ceremonial shawl, and a symbolic trophy.

During the ceremony held at the ‘Sankalp’ auditorium in the Lok Seva Bhawan, Chief Minister Chaudhary awarded Somn Rana, who won a gold medal in men’s F-57 shot put, a check for ₹30 lakh. Jhandu Kumar, who secured a bronze medal in men’s para powerlifting, received a check for ₹15 lakh. The Chief Minister engaged with both athletes, inquiring about their experiences at the Commonwealth Games and congratulating them on their outstanding achievements.

Chief Minister Chaudhary remarked that Somn Rana and Jhandu Kumar have not only brought pride to the nation but have also elevated Bihar’s status on both national and international sports maps. He expressed that honoring these athletes is a matter of pride for the entire state of Bihar.

He reiterated the Bihar government’s commitment to encouraging athletes by providing better training, modern facilities, and necessary support. Efforts are being made to nurture the talent of the state’s promising athletes.

Chaudhary emphasized that the achievements of Bihar’s athletes at national and international levels serve as an inspiration for the youth of the state. These successes motivate young individuals to pursue sports and aim for medals for the country.

He assured that talented athletes from Bihar will continue to receive all possible support and recognition to enhance their performance in national and international competitions. The event was attended by several senior officials, including the Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar, Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, Sports Department Secretary Deepak Anand, and Director General of Bihar State Sports Authority Ravindran Shankaran, along with coach Gautam.
