Tech Mahindra Dismisses Rumors of Massive Layoffs

New Delhi, March 9: Tech Mahindra, a leading player in the IT sector, has refuted widespread rumors circulating on social media regarding significant employee layoffs. The company clarified that there are currently no proposals under consideration for such actions.

In a statement to the stock exchange, Tech Mahindra acknowledged receiving calls and social media posts suggesting a large-scale reduction in its workforce. The company deemed it necessary to clarify that no plans for layoffs are being discussed, and the circulating news is entirely false.

Recent posts on the social media platform X claimed that the company could lay off nearly 30,000 employees. Tech Mahindra employs approximately 150,000 people globally. Recently, the company announced a collaboration with Microsoft to launch a new ontology-based agentic AI platform aimed at accelerating data modernization in the telecom and enterprise sectors.

In the previous quarter, Tech Mahindra also stated that there were no plans for large-scale layoffs. However, the company is working on measures to enhance productivity, which includes reallocating some employees from fixed-price projects to new assignments.

Meanwhile, a recent report by Morgan Stanley indicated that the long-term impact of AI on jobs may not be as severe as many believe. The report suggests that while some tasks may become automated, most employees are unlikely to face permanent unemployment. Many will transition into new types of jobs, some of which do not yet exist. According to the bank, artificial intelligence will change the nature of work rather than eliminate it entirely.

Several leaders in the tech industry have noted that most computer-based white-collar jobs could fall under automation in the next 12 to 18 months.

In contrast, American tech giant Oracle plans to cut 20,000 to 30,000 jobs to enhance AI data center capacity. Similarly, Amazon recently announced the layoff of 16,000 employees as part of its AI restructuring plan.
