New Delhi, April 4: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States has proposed a complete ban on the import of telecommunications and surveillance equipment from certain Chinese companies, citing national security concerns.
According to a report by Channel News Asia (CNA), the FCC had already decided in 2022 to halt the approval of new models from Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua. Now, they are looking to impose a total ban on previously approved equipment in the U.S. market.
The FCC’s report indicates that restricting the continuous import and marketing of such equipment is essential for safeguarding national security. Public feedback is now being sought regarding this proposed ban.
The report also mentions that the Chinese Embassy in Washington and Hikvision did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Devices already purchased can still be used; however, the agency may impose an import ban immediately after finalizing the order to prevent a rush to import new devices.
This proposal follows multiple actions by the FCC targeting Chinese technology, including a ban on new drone models in December and consumer routers last week.
In October, the FCC decided to block new approvals for devices containing parts from companies on its covered list, allowing the agency to ban previously approved equipment in specific cases.
Hikvision had challenged the FCC’s December decision in court, citing interference by the authority. The company also sought to prevent legal authority from retroactively blocking approvals without evidence.
In February, a U.S. appeals court dismissed Hikvision’s request to lift the 2022 FCC ban on the approval of its new video surveillance and telecommunications equipment.
In March, U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic accused three Chinese unicorns (DeepSeek, Minimmax, and Moonshot AI) of illegally extracting capabilities from its cloud model to advance their systems.
