New Delhi, April 2: Bharti Airtel announced on Thursday that it has crossed the milestone of 650 million customers globally, making it the second largest telecom operator in the world by subscriber base.
Under the leadership of Sunil Bharti Mittal, the telecom giant has established a strong presence in India and Africa. According to GSMA Intelligence, Airtel boasts over 368 million mobile users in India alone.
Additionally, 13 million households are connected to fixed broadband, and 15 million customers are utilizing the company’s digital TV services.
In Africa, Airtel Africa serves 179 million customers across 14 countries, offering high-speed data, voice services, and mobile money. Over 52 million users engage with its financial services platform.
Despite this global achievement, Airtel remains the second largest telecom company in India, as Reliance Jio surpassed 500 million users last year, although its services are limited to India.
Commenting on this milestone, Airtel’s Executive Vice Chairman, Gopal Vittal, stated that reaching 650 million customers is a significant responsibility. The company will continue to focus on enhancing customer experience through innovation and reliable services.
Vittal emphasized Airtel’s goal to set new and higher standards in the telecom industry. The company has also been at the forefront of technological advancements, being one of the early adopters of 5G services in India.
According to a report by Kotak Equities, Airtel’s subscriber base has been steadily growing, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9% from FY 2021 to FY 2026.
Notably, the number of data users has increased by 9.7%, indicating that higher-value customers are rapidly joining the network.
The report also highlights significant growth opportunities for the company, particularly in rural areas and mobile broadband. Currently, about 20% of Airtel’s users are still on 2G and 3G networks, presenting a substantial opportunity for the company to upgrade them to faster and better services like 4G and 5G.
