Tamim Iqbal Elected as BCB President for Four-Year Term

Dhaka, June 7: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). He had been managing the board’s interim committee for the past two months. The 36-year-old was the sole candidate in the elections held on Sunday in Dhaka and will serve a four-year term.

The elections took place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Earlier in April, the Bangladesh government decided to dissolve the previous board led by Aminul Islam and conduct new elections under interim administration. A total of 23 directors were elected through physical and electronic voting across three categories, with two representatives appointed by the government, forming a governing body of 25 members. Tamim was among the 12 directors elected from the Dhaka club category, and the new council unanimously chose him as board president. One of the vice-presidents is Faheem Sinha, while the other is yet to be determined.

One of Tamim’s top priorities is to establish a modern high-performance center, which he has described as his greatest aspiration.

After being elected BCB president, Tamim stated that this role is not just a personal honor but a significant responsibility. He remarked, “I don’t feel any special sense of achievement. This is a huge responsibility. I have expressed many views about the cricket board over the past few years, and now I feel it is time to prove myself to everyone.”

Tamim added, “The high-performance center is perhaps my biggest dream. I hope to make this dream a reality. We will need substantial support from the government. Initially, BCB may fund this center. We have requested the company that designed the existing center to redesign it. We hope to establish the center in Purbachal. As you can imagine, such a large-scale project requires significant funding. We will definitely seek government support in this matter.”

This new center will be a major upgrade from the existing high-performance center, which is located within the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium complex but is considered limited in scope.

Tamim Iqbal is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest players, having played 391 international matches and scored over 15,000 runs across all formats. He captained Bangladesh in 38 matches, leading the team to 21 victories. Although he retired from international cricket at the beginning of 2025, he continued to play domestic cricket until he suffered a heart attack during a match in the Dhaka Premier League, which ended his playing career.
