Tamil Nadu Sees 3.31% Increase in Wind Energy Production Over Five Months

Chennai, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Wind energy production in Tamil Nadu has experienced a notable increase of 3.31% in the first five months of the current fiscal year. This growth is attributed to a significant surge in output during July and August, which compensated for a sluggish start to the wind energy season.

According to data from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited, the state generated 10,446 million units of wind energy from April 1 to August 31, compared to 10,112 million units during the same period last year.

Production levels in the April-June quarter fell short of last year’s figures. Specifically, output decreased by 7.8% in April, 27.2% in May, and 22.2% in June. The total production for these three months was 3,601.4 million units, marking a decline of approximately 22.7% from the 4,658.2 million units recorded in the same timeframe the previous year.

The situation improved dramatically in July, as strong winds boosted production to 3,401 million units, an 11% increase from the 3,045 million units produced in July of the previous year. August saw even greater gains, with production reaching 3,444 million units, a remarkable 43% rise compared to the 2,408 million units generated in August 2025.

Throughout July, wind energy production consistently exceeded 100 million units per day, and this trend continued for much of August. Notably, daily electricity generation peaked at 142.430 million units in August, surpassing the previous record of 123.8 million units set in August 2025.

This increase underscores the significant role wind power has played in the state’s electricity supply. In total, 6,845 million units of electricity were produced in July and August combined, representing a 25.5% increase over the 5,453 million units generated during the same months in 2025. This late-season boost was crucial in elevating the overall production figures for the five-month period above last year’s levels.

Renewable energy companies have urged the state’s Green Energy Corporation to implement a policy that would facilitate the integration of new wind and solar capacity. They argue that delays in expanding battery energy storage systems should not hinder progress. Establishing a comprehensive framework could help Tamil Nadu capitalize on improved production figures and strengthen the contribution of renewable sources to its power network.
