Tamil Nadu Reports Highest Dengue Cases in 2025 with Declining Death Rate

Chennai: According to data released by the Union Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of dengue cases in India during 2025. Despite the surge in cases, the death rate remained low due to early diagnosis and prompt medical treatment.

Between January and November 2025, the state reported 20,866 dengue cases and 12 fatalities. Health officials attributed the high case count not to an uncontrolled outbreak but to the robust disease surveillance and reporting system across Tamil Nadu. This system effectively tracks infections from primary health centres to secondary and tertiary care hospitals.

Among southern states, Kerala recorded the highest dengue fatalities with 49 deaths and 10,239 cases in the same period. Andhra Pradesh reported 2,384 cases with five deaths, Telangana had 8,139 cases without any deaths, and Karnataka reported 6,759 cases.

Over the past five years, Tamil Nadu has witnessed a consistent rise in dengue cases. In 2021, there were 6,039 cases and eight deaths, followed by 6,430 cases and eight deaths in 2022. The numbers increased to 9,121 cases with 12 deaths in 2023, and in 2024, the state saw a sharp rise with 27,378 cases and 13 deaths.

Health department officials highlighted that the continuously low mortality rate reflects the effectiveness of early detection, clinical monitoring, and immediate treatment protocols. They emphasized the strength of Tamil NaduтАЩs surveillance system in accurately capturing cases at all healthcare levels.

Medical Director Dr. Janani Shankar noted a decline in dengue cases from the last week of December. She added, тАЬWe are now observing more cases of typhoid, diarrhoea, enteric fever, and respiratory illnesses, mainly due to the winter season and increased travel.тАЭ

Supporting this, Dr. S. Chandrashekhar, Head of General Medicine at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, explained that dengue cases usually persist until February. However, this yearтАЩs reduced rainfall, especially in Chennai, has contributed to an early decrease in cases.

Health officials urged the public to remain vigilant and stressed the importance of continued preventive measures despite the decline in dengue cases.
