Telangana Seizes 3,699 Illegal Domestic LPG Cylinders Amid Crackdown on Hoarding

Hyderabad, April 4: In a significant crackdown against hoarding and black marketing, the Telangana Civil Supplies Department has seized a total of 3,699 illegal domestic LPG cylinders since March 12, officials reported on Friday.

Additionally, 70 small cylinders were confiscated during this operation. The seizures took place between March 12 and April 3, with the total value of the confiscated property estimated at ₹1.10 crore.

Under Section 6A of the Essential Commodities Act, a total of 1,275 cases have been registered, with 216 FIRs filed. This section empowers district collectors to seize essential goods if there are suspicions of hoarding and black marketing.

Authorities are taking action against cases where domestic LPG cylinders are being used for commercial purposes. The Civil Supplies Department has assured the public that there is no shortage of domestic LPG, but warned that strict action will be taken against any misuse.

Consumers have also been advised not to panic and make unnecessary bookings, as this disrupts the smooth operation of the delivery system.

On average, public sector oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), supply approximately 215,000 LPG cylinders daily in the state.

Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has clarified that the stock of petroleum products is more than sufficient for three months. This clarification came after panic buying of petrol and diesel was observed at outlets across the state a few days ago.

However, the state is currently facing a shortage of auto LPG, causing significant difficulties for auto-rickshaw drivers. On March 31, Reddy sent a letter to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, requesting immediate additional supplies of auto LPG to meet the daily shortfall.

He noted that the state is currently experiencing a daily deficit of 55 metric tons. Reddy emphasized that the auto LPG sector has been severely impacted, affecting nearly 100,000 auto-rickshaws and disrupting public transport services, thereby impacting the livelihoods of drivers and their families.
