Tamil Nadu Prepares for Assembly Elections with 5.67 Crore Voters and 75,000 Polling Stations

Chennai, February 27: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar provided an update on the preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He mentioned that the Election Commission has been in Tamil Nadu for the past few days, reviewing electoral preparations with district collectors. During a press conference, he reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections in the state.

Currently, Tamil Nadu has 5.67 crore voters, including 2.89 crore women and 2.77 crore men. There are also 7,617 transgender voters. Approximately 4 lakh senior citizens are over 80 years old, with 2,530 voters aged over 100.

Kumar stated that deceased voters, those who have relocated, or individuals registered in multiple constituencies have been accurately removed from the voter list. A special intensive revision of the voter list took place from October 27, 2025, to February 23, 2026, ensuring that no eligible voter is left out and no ineligible person is included.

Tamil Nadu has 234 assembly constituencies, of which 188 are general, 44 are reserved for Scheduled Castes, and 2 for Scheduled Tribes. This time, around 75,000 polling stations will be established across the state, with approximately 44,000 located in rural areas.

To ensure transparency, 100% webcasting will be implemented at every polling station. Each polling station will accommodate an average of 756 voters, facilitating a comfortable and uninterrupted voting experience. Women will manage 258 polling stations, while 47 will be overseen by persons with disabilities. Additionally, about 265 model polling stations will be set up throughout the state.

Voters will have access to the entire electoral process through their mobile devices, allowing them to view data and information with high accuracy in near real-time. They can check details about candidates, their affidavits, polling station information, and the number of voters.

The Chief Election Commissioner noted that in the past two days, they have reviewed electoral preparations with collectors, SPs, DIGs, IGs, around 24 enforcement agencies, the state government, the Chief Secretary, DGP, and all relevant departments.

He expressed gratitude to all booth-level officers, assistant electoral registration officers, electoral registration officers, district election officers, and all personnel involved in purifying the voter list under the SIR framework.
