Tamil Nadu Government Supports Chess Player Vaishali with ₹10 Lakh Grant

Chennai, May 27: The Tamil Nadu government has granted ₹10 lakh to chess player Vaishali to support her participation in international competitions.

On Tuesday, Public Works and Sports Minister Aadhav Arjun presented Vaishali with the cheque during an event at Nehru Indoor Stadium. He emphasized the government’s commitment to encouraging Tamil Nadu athletes to win medals at international and global levels.

The minister stated that the state government is identifying talented players and providing financial assistance based on their needs to enhance their performance.

He explained that under the ‘Champions Development Scheme’ (CDS), national-level gold medalists under the age of 20 are selected and can receive up to ₹4 lakh annually. This funding can be used for sports attire, equipment purchases, training abroad, and participation in international competitions.

Additionally, the ‘Medal Incentive for International Meets Scheme’ (MIMS) offers up to ₹12 lakh annually to players with the potential to win medals in international competitions. This support is intended for purchasing sports equipment, training abroad, and competing internationally.

The minister also mentioned the ‘Elite Scheme,’ which provides assistance to players capable of winning medals in the Olympics and other international events based on their needs. Each player can receive up to ₹30 lakh annually under this scheme.

Vaishali has been awarded ₹10 lakh to aid her participation in international chess competitions through this initiative.

The minister assured that the state government is timely providing financial support to national-level medalists to help them excel in international and world competitions.

The event was attended by several officials, including Sajjan Singh R. Chavan, Secretary of the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, J. Meghnath Reddy, Member Secretary of the Sports Development Authority, District Revenue Officer R. Suman, and General Manager L. Sujata.
