Glasgow, July 30: Gulveer Singh made headlines on Tuesday night (Indian time) by winning a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 meters at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He became the first Indian to reach the podium in this event. With this achievement, Gulveer has added a Commonwealth medal to his accolades, which already include a bronze from the Asian Games and two gold medals from the Asian Championships.
The exceptional long-distance runner showcased a remarkable performance, delivering a powerful kick in the final lap and finishing with a time of 27:49.78 seconds.
After making history, Gulveer expressed his joy, stating, “I am very happy to win this medal. My aim was to bring a medal for my country. I followed my coach’s instructions. My father is a farmer, and my brother has a job. When people ask my father about me, it brings him great joy.”
He added, “The Government of India is providing us with substantial support. We are receiving ample assistance from SAI. We are being sent abroad for training. Under the Modi government, Indian sports are progressing. We are getting all possible help from the government and the Athletics Federation of India. The government has invested significantly in athletes. Every athlete is working hard. This is my first medal at the Commonwealth Games. My next goal is the Asian Games.”
Gulveer Singh is one of India’s finest long-distance runners, holding national records in the 10,000 meters, 3,000 meters, and 5,000 meters. He serves as a Naib Subedar in the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army and was born in Sirsa village, Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh. He began running on village roads and fields while preparing for recruitment into the Indian Army.
Gulveer gained international recognition by winning a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, followed by another bronze in the 10,000 meters at the 2022 Asian Games. In 2025, he achieved new heights by winning two gold medals in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, establishing himself as one of Asia’s top long-distance runners.
