Glasgow, July 30: In a remarkable display of talent, Indian para-athletes secured both gold and silver medals in the Men’s 100m T47 final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 late Wednesday night (Indian time). Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched the gold medal with a time of 10.71 seconds, setting a new games record and achieving his season’s best performance. Meanwhile, Mohammad Basil Morsingnakath earned the silver medal with a personal best of 10.83 seconds.
With this historic achievement, Dilip Mahadu Gavit became the first Indian male athlete to win a gold medal in para-athletics at the Commonwealth Games. He joins the ranks of Sharmila, who won gold in the Women’s Shot Put F57 event, making him the second Indian para-athlete to achieve this feat.
The bronze medal was awarded to England’s Kevin Santos, who finished with a time of 10.85 seconds.
Born in Toran Dongri village near Nashik, Dilip Gavit previously won a gold medal in the Men’s 400m T47 event at the Asian Para Games 2022, marking India’s 100th medal in these games. He has also qualified for the finals in the Men’s 400m T47 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, further elevating the country’s status in para-athletics.
Basil hails from Veliyancode, a small coastal town in Malappuram district, Kerala. Under the guidance of coach Srinivasan, he trains at LNCPE-SAI in Thiruvananthapuram while pursuing a degree. His hard work and disciplined training have established him as one of India’s most promising para sprinters, and he proved his mettle at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
