Tamil Nadu Election Commission Deploys 1,249 Personnel for Assembly Election Preparations

Chennai, March 8: The Tamil Nadu Election Department has transferred 1,249 personnel from various government departments to strengthen preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. This initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to manage the anticipated increase in administrative and logistical tasks in the months leading up to the elections.

Officials stated that this reallocation is part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, aimed at ensuring that the electoral rolls are updated and error-free before the elections.

The Election Department has already initiated several preliminary activities, including reviewing the infrastructure of polling stations, mobilizing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and enhancing election management systems across the state.

According to officials, the workload for the Election Department is expected to escalate rapidly following the formal announcement of the polling schedule by the Election Commission. To ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process, the state government has decided to temporarily create 1,249 additional positions and deploy personnel from various departments to assist election officials.

The transferred staff will support various responsibilities related to election operations. This includes assisting in the arrangement of polling stations, coordinating the distribution and storage of EVMs, implementing voter awareness programs, and ensuring effective communication between district election offices and state headquarters.

Officials will also help enforce the Model Code of Conduct once it comes into effect. This involves monitoring political activities, preventing damage to public property from posters or banners, and ensuring that political parties and candidates strictly adhere to election regulations.

Another key focus area for the additional staff will be the voter awareness campaign. The Election Department plans to intensify campaigns encouraging citizens to verify their names on the voter list and actively participate in the democratic process.

According to the government order, the reallocated positions will remain active from the date of appointment until June 30, covering the entire period necessary for election preparations, polling arrangements, and post-election administrative tasks.

These personnel will be deployed in districts, including major urban and administrative centers such as Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Kanchipuram, and Viluppuram.

Election officials anticipate that the additional personnel will significantly strengthen the state’s election system, helping to ensure that the assembly elections are conducted smoothly, efficiently, and in accordance with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
