Chennai, March 7: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin met with RN Ravi on Saturday in Chennai to congratulate him on his appointment as the new Governor of West Bengal.
The meeting took place at the official residence of the Governor in Guindy and was marked by a formal and cordial atmosphere, despite previous political differences between the two leaders.
According to official sources, the meeting was a courtesy visit following the central government’s announcement of RN Ravi’s transfer to West Bengal. During the visit, Chief Minister Stalin honored the Governor with a traditional shawl and presented him with a statue of the renowned Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar as a symbol of goodwill.
This meeting comes at a time when tensions have been high between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu and Governor RN Ravi over various issues in recent years.
There have been multiple disagreements between the two sides regarding administrative and legislative matters, with the most significant dispute revolving around delays in the approval of several bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The state government has accused the Governor of unnecessarily delaying the approval of crucial legislation, which has hindered the functioning of the elected government.
The conflict escalated to the point where the state government sought intervention from the Supreme Court, requesting clear directives on the Governor’s role and timeline concerning bills passed by the Assembly.
Despite these differences, Saturday’s meeting is seen as a sign of political and constitutional decorum. Observers suggest that this encounter symbolizes the end of RN Ravi’s tenure in Tamil Nadu, as he prepares to take on new responsibilities in West Bengal.
This development follows the resignation of C.V. Ananda Bose on March 5, which left the Governor’s position in West Bengal vacant. Subsequently, President Droupadi Murmu appointed RN Ravi as the new Governor of West Bengal.
In another announcement from the President’s office, it was stated that until further arrangements are made, R.V. Arlekar will hold additional charge as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Political analysts believe that this brief meeting between Stalin and Ravi marks a formal yet significant moment, signaling the closure of a chapter filled with long-standing constitutional and political disputes between the Tamil Nadu government and the Raj Bhavan.
